@djainslie WANTED: teachers who take risks, admin who support risks, parents who see value of risks, then we will c gr8 progress #edchat

I tweeted that out during this past week’s #edchat. The discussion question was ‘Considering Education Reform today, what innovations, strategies, methods should be added, dropped or maintained?’. It, as usual, was a lively discussion that covered many different ideas. The biggest one being that it takes many different innovations, strategies and methods to engage students in meaningful learning opportunities.

@davidwees: My belief is that there is NO one innovation that will work for every community of learners

Also mentioned was that all stakeholders need to be involved, we need to create global connections, make education relevant, integrate real world technology, and invest in the continual learning of educators.

My contribution was that I think it is all about taking risks.  @djainslie WANTED: teachers who take risks, admin who support risks, parents who see value of risks, then we will c gr8 progress #edchat

We as educators have to take risks. Administrators have to take risks to help support our teachers, staff, and students. Teachers need to take risks and try new methods and approaches to make sure all their students live up to their potential. Parents need to understand that learning is all about taking risks and ‘failing forward’. Students need to feel empowered to take risks and not fear failure. Everyone on all levels need to take risks.

I took a risk this week. I won’t go into all the details but felt that this risk was worth it. I did it for my fellow administrators, educators, and the students of my district. Is it scary to take risks? Absolutely.  Is it worth it? Absolutely. Even if my risk doesn’t reap the benefits I hope it will, I am glad I took it. At least I can say I have done everything I can do in this situation.

So next time you are faced with a risk to take, ask yourself “will it help students?” If the answer is yes, then I say go for it.
